The distinguishing feature is strict blinding: members have no access to patients’ treatment allocation, which minimises assessment bias and ensures that complex diagnoses are consistently classified as trial endpoints.
The work of the CEC is based on a detailed charter that sets out the decision-making processes and definitions. The committee receives anonymised data packages from data management and makes the final decision on whether a reported event meets the predefined criteria. This process is of decisive importance, particularly in Phase III trials with variable endpoints, for scientific validity and for the acceptance of the data by regulatory authorities.
For CROs, coordinating a CEC is a complex logistical task that requires seamless integration of data management, medical expertise and quality control. A professionally run CEC demonstrates the highest methodological rigour to authorities such as the FDA or EMA and reduces the risk that efficacy data will be called into question due to inconsistencies in event assessment.

Back to overview

A Blinded Endpoint Committee, often also called a Clinical Endpoint Committee (CEC), is a group of independent experts who assess clinical events in a trial according to standardised criteria.
